People transitioned into employment

The Mulberry Project Ltd is an employment focused social enterprise founded in 2016 as a migrant market gardening initiative that upskills and connects disadvantaged job seekers with employers in the Australian agricultural, horticultural and rural sectors.

We collaborate with horticulture industry body Growcom, to design and deliver funded employment pathway initiatives, particularly employment pathway programs to link refugees, migrants and other disadvantaged job seekers to agricultural employment.

Imagine spending 16 years in a refugee camp only to come to a country where you can’t find a job?

That is the fate of 33% of new migrants in the Toowoomba region five years after arrival. Our city has welcomed around 10,000 humanitarian migrants over the past decade and is the third largest refugee settlement area in Queensland. While picking mulberries at our property in Nobby in late September 2016, a friend said, “You have so much land! Why aren’t you growing anything?”

The Mulberry Project grew from this conversation and connects two issues:

Underutilised farmland and unemployment in migrant communities

The Mulberry Project aims to address unemployment in disadvantaged communities by:

Transforming underutilised farmland into niche market gardens, and facilitating pathways to training, employment and well-being for migrants through the growing and preparing of food

Our dream is to rethink settlement by developing a model for social and economic inclusion through sustainable food production across the country.
